Meet The Sentience Team

If you are considering taking steps toward personal healing, we acknowledge and commend your courage and resilience. We’re grateful to have had the privilege to work with many individuals who chose to journey toward personal growth and change. Having had this opportunity has solidified our belief in human resilience in the face of adversity.

Our hope is that therapy will be a place where you find lasting change. We look forward to talking with you.

“Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.”
– Brene Brown

Our Values

Ethics

Ethics are about safety – for you and for your counsellor. Therapy can feel vulnerable for many people, however vulnerability plays a key role in healing. Creating a deep sense of safety guided by ethics, supports safe self-exploration and healing.

Compassion

Compassion means “to suffer with;” it is a deep awareness of the suffering of others, coupled with a desire to alleviate it. Accessing compassion for oneself and others is woven throughout therapy.

Connection

Fostering a secure connection or attachment with a therapist creates a secure base from which you can begin to explore your attachments with your inner and outer world.

Self - awareness

Self-awareness supports us in gaining distance from, and in objectively observing, our thoughts, emotions and body sensations. Learning to observe our inner experiences encourages the ability to evaluate and determine whether our actions align with our values and standards.

Acceptance

Acceptance plays multiple roles in therapy. Your therapist’s role is to offer acceptance of what you bring to therapy without judgement and to hold a validating space for you to explore your inner world. Acceptance of oneself, one’s thoughts and emotions is a healing attitude that is modelled and encouraged throughout therapy.

Respect

Respectful interactions in therapy will support the development of trust in the therapeutic relationship. Your therapist will bring curiosity, non-judgement, honesty, and genuineness. You will be listened to, with an effort to understand, as well as encouraged to self-determine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, your privacy is of utmost importance to us. We maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with ethical guidelines and legal requirements. Your sessions are a safe space to discuss your challenges openly.

The therapeutic approach will be a collaborative decision based on the issue you’re experiencing, your strengths and interests, previous counselling experience, and clinical considerations such as which type of therapy is identified as effective for a particular issue.

Although a friend can be a wonderful source of support, and are often someone you feel safe with and can trust, sometimes leaning too heavily on our friends to provide support can leave them feeling overwhelmed.

Similar to a friend, a counsellor also provides a safe and confidential environment for you to share what is going on for you and feel heard. The difference is that a counsellor is trained in therapeutic interventions to support you in working through the source of the problem you are dealing with so that you might move through, overcome, or learn to cope with the situation.
